Summary

Operating systems are basic elements on each computer for running any type of software. All computer science students and also students from related subject curricula have to learn and know the principal concepts and mechanisms of operating systems to understand programming languages and software, built on top of operating systems. The planned e-learning course is going to complement the traditional lectures, especially in topics where hands-on trainings are feasible and a higher learning success and sustainability can be expected. The course and the in itself closed learning modules give tutors the possibility to use all or single modules and to add new modules later. We plan to implement the modules process scheduling, inter-process communication, memory management, file systems, distributed file systems, security and device drivers and input/output. With the cooperation of several institutions, it is possible to share resources and knowledge as well as to save money. The students profit from a didactically structured and graphically appealing course with interesting interactive and animated learning content and the possibility to individually perform hands-on trainings around the clock.
